Episode 67 | Kathy Lisson

From spectator to state leader, Kathy Lisson’s motorsport story has been written in oil, determination, and grit.

After years of watching her husband Rod race, Kathy decided she wanted more than the sidelines. “Find me a car I can fit into,” she told him. One drive was all it took — she was hooked. Twelve years later, she’s not just racing, she’s leading, as the President of the Formula V Association of WA and one of the most respected figures in grassroots motorsport.

Kathy’s career has had it all: podium finishes, interstate races, a few scary moments — including a dramatic rollover that made international headlines and earned her a cheeky TV payment. But through it all, her love for Formula V hasn’t wavered. “It’s affordable, competitive, and full of great people,” she says. “It’s a family.”

That family ethos runs deep. The club’s success in attracting new drivers, especially women, is no accident. Under Kathy’s leadership, Formula V WA has focused on inclusion and mentoring. “If I can do it, you can too,” she says, recalling countless young fans who’ve jumped into cars at club displays. “Seeing other women on track inspires the next generation.”

Off track, Kathy also volunteers as a Driver Standards Adviser, helping shape the next wave of safe and skilled racers. Her hands-on approach and calm leadership have earned her respect across the paddock — even from those she’s beaten. (And yes, she’s beaten Rod.)

With the state championship still within reach and plans for more national racing ahead, Kathy shows no signs of slowing down. Her story is proof that motorsport isn’t just about horsepower — it’s about heart, humour, and a whole lot of persistence.
