After an uproar from fans last year, the Perth Supercars event returns with THREE days of access for fans instead of just TWO.
Billed as the “new rivalry” of Ford vs Chevy, the Gen3 cars will make their debut at CARCO.com.au Raceway on Friday 28 April – Sunday 30 April during the event which will be all daytime action, no more night time.
In addition to the Gen3 cars, support categories for the round include local category Historic Touring Cars, Dunlop Series, GT World Challenge Australia and SuperUtes
Current information from Supercars is that gates will open at the following times:
Friday – 8.15am
Saturday – 8.45am
Sunday – 7.45am
We have a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE bit of advice for anyone attending, DON’T DRIVE! We know Perth people love their cars but as like any event in Perth, when everyone drives, there are delays!
If you MUST park, use the offsite parking in Peak Road, Neerabup and jump on the shuttlebus to and from the event which will drop you off at Gate 35.
The on-site parking is limited and we can’t stress enough to come by Ride Share, Taxi, Public Transport or use off-site parking. It will make your day enjoyable and less stressful. Plus if you’re not driving, you can enjoy certain liquid beverages more, responsibly of course!
As for the track action, things to look out for?
On the Supercars side of things will be how the Gen3 cars do around CARCO.com.au Raceway. As the SuperUtes found out in 2022, this track is punishing on cars. Add to that every driver that we’ve spoken to on our podcast has mentioned the unique aspects of the track including that there are only 7 corners which means every corner counts, plus the short amount of time the elevation changes around the track. Get one thing wrong and your whole lap is gone. This track is not one to be thought of as a “simple” track.
In the Dunlop Series, Brad Vaughan will be wanting to make sure he doesn’t breach the testing rules as what happened in 2022. The breach saw him start from Pitlane with a heft fine included for him and the team.
Some familiar racing names are on the grid with the next generation of Perkins, Morris, Kelly, Johnson and Seton taking to the track. Perth (semi-local) Aaron Love will also be competing in the series.
Hopefully Lachlan Dalton’s skills navigating around the CARCO.com.au Raceway circuit are better than his skills at getting to a podcast interview (sorry, we had to have a dig!).
Elly Morrow who became the first female to race in the latest S5000 series at the Goldcoast 500 in 2022 also drove a Formula Ford entry in 2022 at a WA Sporting Car Club event. This experience will no doubt give her a bit of an advantage against some of the debutants who have not driven the circuit prior.
Over in SuperUtes we’ll be interested to see how they go after the first year appearance at the track which was plagued with mechanical issues but still put on a fantastic showing for the crowd.
While we haven’t been privvy to a full entry list for the opening round of the 2023 SuperUtes season, we’ve heard some rumours about perhaps a form V8 Utes driver returning to SuperUtes after a succesful outing last year.
Adrian Cottrell, Ryal Harris and Jimmy Vernon are all confirmed for 2023 as well as Ellexandra Best who previously competed in Australian Production Car Championship, Toyota 86 races and two seasons in SuperUtes where she finished 12th and 9th in the championship. Best also recently competed in the Bathurst 6 Hour where alongside Karlie Buccini and Courtney Prince they finished 21st overall and 2nd in class in the all female team.
Apart from a small blip on the “this bullshit again” radar, nothing of note nor importance has come out of GT World Challenge Australia as yet regarding drivers competing in Perth.
