Hamlett Tops Time Attack Field as Douglas Takes out Time Challenge

A 51.1861 lap time stood out amongst the Time Attack contenders while Douglas continued his 2024 form.

The 2025 Tarmac Sportz Series events at CARCO Raceway yet again brought out a multitude of various cars with 55 competitors entered across the Time Attack and Time Challenge disciplines.

Running alongside the Tarmac Sportz Series event was the State Speed Event Series which combines its events with WA Sporting Car Club at CARCO Raceway and runs its own standalone events at Collie Motorplex.

TIME CHALLENGE

The Time Challenge discipline, otherwise known as regularity, is the type of motorsport that demands precision driving rather than flat out speed. The driver must keep their speed, position on the track, breaking, gear changes, etc all “regular” so that they meet their nominated time and don’t accrue penalty points when they go over or under their time. Luckily for those in this category the weather stayed relatively the same all day so no random wet tracks were thrown in to mix it up.

Showing why he was the 2024 WASCC Tarmac Sportz Time Challenge championship runner up last year, Joe Douglas put in two 0 point penalty laps through the day – meaning he had less than a 0.01 variance between lap times – and a total second session score of 57 points.

Bumping into Douglas who was full of smiles as usual in the pit area, he said he was enjoying the day being around like minded motorsport people who were there to have fun, go driving and enjoy the day.

Douglas however wasn’t getting a clean sweep of the day with Madison Galton taking out the first session and rookie Ashleigh Cove taking out the third session and sneaking in with consistent appearances in the top 3 was Peter Dyball who eventually took out third overall for the day behind Galton in second and Douglas in first. First year competitor Asheligh Cove was just one point behind Dyball thanks to her third session efforts.

TIME ATTACK

After appearing at the Festival of Speed in October at CARCO Raceway, Laine Brandis returned to the track with his popular Nissan Skyline and while he mentioned in the lead up to the event he wasn’t going to be going for lap record pace, he still managed to put on a great show with sparks flying out of the back of the car as it bottomed out at the bottom of Turn 7 just before incline as drivers enter the corner.

The time attack category had a variety of cars ranging from the souped up Nissan Skyline to road going cars and even a La base SX01 CrossKart aka Yacar Crosskart making an appearance.

Topping the timing records was Tom Hamlett driving a Dallara F3 putting in a blistering 51.1861 lap time with Brandis the next in the list with a 55.7132. David Baxter’s Radical SR3 was next in line with a 58.2910.

At the time of publishing, the individual class breakdown wasn’t available.
