After two attempts to hold a race meeting have been curtailed by weather this season already, West Gippsland motorsport fans are hoping it can be third time lucky and we get in a race show this Saturday from mid afternoon and into early evening at Drouin Speedway.
With round one of the Wingless Sprints Gippsland Series and the Standard Saloon ‘Sally Memorial’ the two headline events, supported strongly by local stars in Ladies, Junior Standard Saloons, and the Junior 1200cc Sedans.
Wingless Sprint entries include drivers from right across Gippsland along with some welcome travellers from out of town. Wayne Logue and his father Peter from Morwell are two drivers with a rich racing history and Wayne has been a winner in the past few seasons at the Drouin Speedway track.
Thomas McDonald, Latrobe Valley racer Ricky Mills, Drouin local Scott Irons, Tyler O’Leary, Aron Lawrence, Kim-Loong Gosling Ben Hodge, Bunyip’s Travis Evans, and Bairnsdale racer Dillon.
The six-cylinder open-wheel class get around Drouin Speedway with plenty of sideways thrills and round one of the Gippsland Series is a tipster’s nightmare with the talent on offer.
Co-main eventing the day is the ‘Sally Memorial’ for Standard Saloons, a now popular annual event for the Standard Saloon class made up of Ford’s and Holdens and mostly Falcons and Commodore’s with a mixture of six- and eight-cylinder engine power. The class has had some specification changes in the off season so this will be the first opportunity to really see how the cars performance changes. There is likely to be thirty cars on Saturday trying to win this event.
Some of the front competitors used to winning in the memorial event include Shane Stewart from Morwell the defending event champion, Jeff Blencowe from Bunyip, Leigh Gooding, Mark Miles, Jack Yeomans, Matt Leek, and Brad Warren.
In Junior Standard Saloon competition Nathan Miles is the top driver based on past results, however Beau Stuchbery from East Gippsland, Bree Walker from Latrobe Valley, Zoe Hunt, Jack Braz, and Drouin’s own Cooper Joynson will pressure Nathan.
The Junior 1200cc Sedan’s return, for those that seen these fast little racers in June this year, they were lapping our speedway in times faster than the open aged Standard Saloon competitors. Arthur Hutchinson is the benchmark in the class and Riley Taylor, Bryce Leek, Ella Sheedy from Bunyip, and Braiden Webster from Wonthaggi are other competitors to watch.
Ladies Standard Saloons also compete and a favourite daughter of the Drouin club in previous years Trish Dike returns to compete. Trish now a two-time Victorian champion will be up against, Dette Miles, Maddison Miles, Kate Stuchbery and Michelle George competing at her first ‘Sally Memorial’ day and significant because her partner is Paul, the widow of Sally.
Gates open from 9:30am. Racing from 1pm
