David Reynolds has scored a season best result for Penrite Racing with a second place finish in the opening race of the Beaurepaires Melbourne 400 today.
Starting from pole position, Reynolds donned the faster soft tyre compound and lead the opening lap of the race before tyre wear began to cause chaos throughout the field.
After pitting on lap 7, Reynolds stormed back through the field on the safer hard tyre to finish P2 and stand on the prized Formula 1 podium at Albert Park
Meanwhile Lee Holdsworth, who started P5, had a difficult day after choosing the opposite strategy which meant a longer second stint on soft tyres was required.
The fast Albert Park layout proved to hard a task over more than three laps for the compound to last, forcing him into a second unwanted pit stop and down the order.
Earlier in the day, Qualifying for championship Race 8 (Saturday afternoon) and Race 9 (Sunday’s race) took place.
Reynolds managed to produce a P4 grid spot for Race 8 while Holdsworth’s flying lap was impeded after Todd Hazelwood hit the wall.
A tight 10 minute turnaround followed for Qualifying for Race 9 where a tyre gamble for Reynolds, taking warm from tyres from the previous session, didn’t pay off on the timesheets. Reynolds starting P12 with Holdsworth P14 for Sunday’s race.
