After Shane van Gisbergen had his winning ways interrupted at the 2nd round of the 2021 Shannon’s Motorsport Australia Championships, his first win of the weekend at the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint looked to reinstate his dominant run in motorsport this year.
However Red bull Ampol Racing driver Jamie Whincup put a stop to that in the 2nd race of the round breaking a drought of 232 days without a victory in the series while snapping Van Gisbergen’s winning streak in the series of 203 days with a winning margin of just over 1 second.
Meanwhile Chaz Mostert also broke his winning drought in the third race of the weekend where he hasn’t won a race for over 2 years. The win also saw the Red Bull Ampoll Racing team not step on the top step of the series for the first time this year and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s first victory.
Other action over the weekend include a 3 into 1 during the 1st race of the weekend where Cameron Waters and Jamie Whincup were joined by Chaz Mostert with the latter locking his wheels up and avoiding spearing Whincup off the corner.
The Red Mist came to visit in the 2nd race of the weekend during the first lap with Anton De Pasquale getting turned around, after a horrible start, at the hairpin by Jack Le Brocq before Andre Heimgartner thought he’d join in the fun, possibly thinking it was the eSeries all over again, turning around Le Brocq with Jake Kostecki heading to the rough stuff to avoid a collision while at high speed.
After the first lap incident, Macauley Jones gave James Courtney a little love tap and sent him across Turns 1 and 2 destroying some innocent track markers in the process, collecting Jack Smith on the way through. Luckily both drivers were able to continue on driving off after the incident.
Probably the move of the weekend would have to go to Scott Pye however when he took the short way through the hairpin, without exceeding track limits, to over take Le Brocq.
