With over 140 entrants across the day, the Good Friday Burnout King was always going to be hotly contested and for Dwayne Pallentine in his 1974 Torana “PEPERIT” he managed to beat the competition with a 12 point margin back to Joel Snell in his 2009 Commodore “FKNFUN”. Heading back to 3rd was just a 3 point margin with Greg Cuthbertson’s “GRUMPYVS”, a further 3 points back to Jamie Ball in “SHITTORQUER” and kid favourite Jamie Weeks’ “MATER” just one point back.
Back in the Open class, Shane Gardiner in “HELLBOUND and Stephen O’Brien in “QUP4THIS” were tied for first, but a countback including all five judges scores saw Gardiner edge out O’Brien by 13 points.
Also finishing in the top 5 was Shannon Carson in “ILLICIT”, Jason Tanian in “KENOATH” and Ewan Haxton in “VKAOS”.
As for the Sportsman Class, the .. uhh .. variety of how the cars were setup and number plate puns kept on coming with Jack Alfirevich’s “AUGASM” (no prizes for guessing what sort of car that was!) taking out top spot, with Dayne Bairstow “HAVEAGO”, Nathan Creber’s “HLDMEBEER”, Sheehan Varney in “BALUMPKIN” and Lauren Youngs in “CARST8R” rounding out the top 5.
With a huge entry list and the usual time limits imposed on motorsport venues, the Motorplex crew did a fantastic job keeping the pad cleared and ready for the next entrant even when there were some breakdowns and fires.
Commentators Chris Mitchell and Sean McCabe were joined by Connor McClure on the microphone to add spice to the night with the team keeping it rolling from 5pm through to 10pm finish with minimal downtime and none of the boring stuff. Mitchell’s almost childlike enthusiasm was clearly infections in the crowd with them lapping up every exciting moment.
The drag / burnout crew at Motorplex have one last outing for the 2020/21 season with the finals of the WA Drag Racing Championships on Saturday 10th April 2021 featuring the Jet Dragsters putting in exhibition runs.
