Motorsport is a cruel mistress and this was on display when Simon Garbutt faced off against rookie Jarrod Maclean in the first elimination of the Modified Bike category at Perth Motorplex’s Night of Fire.

After chatting with Maclean earlier in the day and him expressing how hard it was to get out of that first round and most take a few years to do it, the commentary booth lit up when Garbutt had a mechanical issue at the starting line which allowed Maclean to take the win.

During the past week, Garbutt had been a huge help to Maclean with refitting the gearbox into Maclean’s CBR929RR to get it ready to compete this weekend and are sharing tent space in the pit area.

Returning to his pit area with mixed emotions, Maclean embraced partner and crew chief Zoe before shedding a little tear, no doubt in happiness and with a little bit of sorrow for the guy who helped him get there this weekend.

Maclean now moves into the “big show” of the main event at the Perth Motorplex when the sky will be lit up by the night of fire with the main feature being the Jet Dragsters.
