It’s time to start counting down the days until Motorvation 35 hits the Perth Motorplex from the 15th January until 17th January 2021.
While there might be a few “Wow who cares, Motorvation is dead!” cries from the peanut gallery, the biggest news this year is that the team from Summernats has jumped on board to revive the once revered West Australian event founded by Rob Woodcock and Phil Cockayne from the Perth City Street Machine Club.
“We’d been asked a bunch of times about doing a show in WA, so after Summernats 33, I reached out to the Motorplex about working together. I knew about Motorvation and its long history and great heritage,” Andy Lopez from Summernats says. “Summernats and Motorvation had always had a certain synergy. In the glory days, a truck would leave Summernats and head to this legendary show in the west with some of our best burnout and elite cars.
“We’re looking at a real partnership around programming, awards, judging and other content. The relationship with Motorvation and us isn’t brand new. Motorvation has been a Superstars qualifying event for MotorEx for a long time. We’ve also seen a bunch of the best burnout drivers from WA qualify to compete in the Burnout Masters competition at Summernats as a result of winning Motorvation, so we know just how passionate and skilled people are in the west.”
Back in the 90s some lucky folk will remember when it used to be held in the car park at the then “Burswood Casino” and was a massive event. Showcars and stalls filling the inside of the old “Burswood Dome” as well as the outside holding burnout comps and more. This writer has fond recollections of a jet engine truck doing burnouts in the parking lot, filling the air with smoke and all you could hear was the “Thud, thud, thud” of the engine in between donuts.
So will this partnership be what has been needed to revive Motorvation? We certainly hope so!
