Tickford’s travelling crew has been away from its Victorian base since July 6, completing seven race events across Sydney, Darwin, Townsville, and Tailem Bend, and temporarily basing its operations out of Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast.
Fresh from winning the most recent race on the calendar at The Bend Motorsport Park, Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) sits third in the Supercars drivers’ championship, and enters the Bathurst event in fine form at the season’s climax. Tipped as one of the top co-drivers in this year’s field, two-time Bathurst winner Will Davison joins Waters in the No. 6 Mustang. Davison drove for Tickford’s customer team, 23Red Racing, at the start of 2020, however was forced to the sidelines when 23Red withdrew from the championship during the season’s pause due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
A dozen years after standing on the podium together, Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso (No. 5 Truck Assist Ford Mustang) reunite for a second shot at Bathurst hardware, this time with Truck Assist Racing. Holdsworth enters the event 12th in the drivers’ championship, while Caruso enters his second year co-driving with the team after pairing with Waters in 2019.
James Courtney (No. 44 Boost Mobile Ford Mustang) has stood on the Bathurst podium four times in his career, including a third place finish in 2019, but hopes to finally reach the top step in 2020 after a roller coaster season of his own. Courtney will be joined by Tickford Super2 driver Broc Feeney, who will celebrate a special 18th birthday on Sunday, competing in his first Bathurst 1000.
In his only previous start for Tickford at Bathurst, Jack Le Brocq (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang) finished fourth in 2016 co-driving with Cameron Waters. Le Brocq returned to the team in 2020 and recorded his first career win at Sydney Motorsport Park in July, and with confidence in his race car, is optimistic he and co-driver James Moffat – who returns to the team for a third year in the Supercheap Auto Ford – can challenge for the win.
Practice for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 begins Thursday, October 15, followed by qualifying on Friday, the illustrious Top Ten Shootout on Saturday, and Australia’s Great Race taking place Sunday, October 18.
